Thyroid Disease Treatment in Glen Burnie, MD
Fatigue. Weight changes. Temperature sensitivity. Changes in your heartbeat. Difficulty concentrating. These symptoms can occur with thyroid disease, but they can also have many other causes.
That is why thyroid care starts with evaluation rather than assumptions.
What Does the Thyroid Do?
Your thyroid is a small gland in the front of your neck that produces hormones involved in metabolism and energy use throughout your body.
Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism occurs when your thyroid does not produce enough thyroid hormone.
Possible symptoms include fatigue, feeling cold, constipation, dry skin, changes in weight, menstrual changes and difficulty concentrating.
Hyperthyroidism
Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid produces more hormone than your body needs. Thyroid hormones affect nearly every organ, including the heart.
Symptoms may include:
- Racing heartbeat
- Tremor
- Heat intolerance
- Increased sweating
- Difficulty sleeping
- Anxiety
- Unexplained weight loss
Thyroid Testing
Blood testing may include TSH and additional thyroid tests when clinically appropriate.
Results should be interpreted alongside your symptoms, health history and medications.
Thyroid Medication Requires Monitoring
This is particularly important for patients taking thyroid replacement medication.
NIDDK notes that blood testing is typically performed after initiating or adjusting thyroid medication, followed by periodic monitoring after an effective dose has been established.
Too little medication may leave hypothyroidism inadequately treated. Too much thyroid hormone can also create health risks.
Thyroid Symptoms and Menopause
Fatigue, sleep problems, mood changes and weight changes can overlap with symptoms associated with perimenopause and menopause.
Rather than automatically attributing symptoms to hormones or thyroid disease, your provider can evaluate the broader clinical picture.
When to Schedule Thyroid Care
Schedule an evaluation if you have:
- A previous thyroid diagnosis
- Abnormal thyroid laboratory results
- New symptoms
- A thyroid medication requiring follow-up
- Significant unexplained weight changes
- A family history of thyroid disease
